What is your idea and purpose?  We want sustainability to become a bigger part of the primary school education, so that sustainability is being included at all levels and across subjects, and where the didactic foundation is based on design thinking, creativity, visualizations, and innovation. Our idea is based on sustainability, the Sustainable Development Goals and problem-based learning. We are working on a creative competence development course for teachers and educators in the primary school. We believe that there is a need for teachers to gain greater insight into sustainability, so that it is not only sustainability in terms of avoiding food waste and combating climate change, but also social sustainability and across various disciplines. So that teachers can work more broadly with it, either through theme days, but also that sustainability is considered in more subjects. It is not because it is not being worked on already, but the purpose is to bring a broader perspective on sustainability in the primary school.

What inspired you to start? It was in connection with one of us having Corona and lying in my bed in isolation. It set my thoughts in motion in terms of sustainability and a wish that I (Mia) would like to collaborate with Hanne, who I knew worked as an external associate professor at Aalborg University with sustainable design. And I knew that the skills Hanne has, will make good sense to use in relation to the needs that I know exist in the primary school. Therefore, I asked Hanne if we should do something together, and she agreed. Then there was this ØreXund Excubator course, where you could get help to start a business together and then we signed up. We have also participated in a Folkemøde, where there was a focus on this specific topic, and it confirmed to us that there was a need for a broader focus on sustainability in the primary school.

What do you hope to learn from the ØreXund Excubator course? We were part of team 2 and have just finished the course. What we have learned is how to make a business out of this. Not necessarily exactly how we are going to make money out of it, but more in relation to what form of company form that may suit us e.g., and A.M.B.A. We have thought that we would like to do something in common and call it The Umbrella – for a more sustainable school, where we also will be able to invite others under the umbrella and perhaps in time will be able to create it as a cooperative. We are now establishing the company values and looking at how we can find others who are also passionate about this.

Have you been inspired by the other participants in ØreXund Excubator? We have not been able to meet physically, but we have still received a lot of sparring from our advisor, and we have been able to get an insight into how the others build up their ideas and small businesses. However, not as much as we could have hoped for, because the course has primarily been held online. But still, we have met each other on the intro day, where we have also been able to hear that there were others who also work with sustainability.

What changes in the world would you like to create with your idea?                                                                                 We want to qualify the teaching in primary school, so that the students can work much more concretely and feel that they have more agency in relation to sustainability. So that the teachers can get projects started, which gives the students motivation, vision, and that they see that you can lift big agendas in groups. So that the primary school and the focus on sustainability becomes less individualized and more community oriented. The challenge is that we must be careful not to breathe into the ’climate anxiety’, but instead seek to build constructive, problem-solving, and experimental learning spaces. Our bid is a community-driven strategy, where municipalities, schools, teachers, and students together through design processes build new networks and learning spaces that visibly not just puts sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals on the agenda, but in practice work with them.
